Business Analyst turned author, Cora Miller has created her first collection of short stories, Winter Collection. These stories of sibling rivalry, love gone awry and murder are available through www.starpublish.com. ChocolateSleuth.com had the opportunity to speak with the author recently to answer questions about the book and to address rumors that swirl around the release of her latest work. A portion of the interview follows:
CS- Winter Collection is a haunting collection of tales that touched me deeply. I couldn’t put the book down. Tell us, what was your inspiration in writing these stories?
CM—The stories are fact-based.
CS- Really? That’s interesting.
CM—Every story is drawn from my personal experiences.
CS- I don’t understand. Are you saying that all 11 stories are based on actual events—things that happened to you personally?
CM—That’s what I’m saying.
CS- So Winter Collection is autobiographical?
CM—Yes, it’s a memoir.
CS- Winter Collection is a memoir?
CM—Exactly.
CS-Okay. How long have you been writing?
CM—Wow, that’s a toughie. I’d guess since the 17th century.
CS- The 17th century?
CM—Oh yes. In each of my previous lives, strangely enough, I was a writer as well.
CS- (nervous laughter) That is strange. You mean sort of like Shirley MacLaine?
CM- Funny you should mention Shirley ... We have spent time together in many lifetimes, most memorably during the London cholera epidemic of 1854. Ahhh, the fun we had in '88 when "Ripper" madness swept the city.
CS- So are you telling me that you and Shirley MacLaine spent time together in a previous life?
CM—(picking up mic and tapping it) HELLO…is this thing on? What are you deaf and dumb?
CS- harrumph ... Well, no need to be insulting ...I'm just trying to get an interview.
CM—Well, maybe it’s just me, but I would think a major criterion for conducting interviews would be the ability to listen.
CS- Let’s move on. Why do you write mysteries?
CM—You should write what you know, I’ve always heard.
CS-But your books feature murderers, embezzlers, the criminally insane—all sorts of nefarious characters. Are you saying you’ve participated in or experienced—
CM—Look. Nobody was able to prove I took any money and my doctor said as long as I stay on my meds I wouldn’t have a problem. I take offense at being characterized as nefarious.
CS-What about murder?
CM—What about it?
CS- Are you a murderer?
CM—I prefer the term reverse propagation. You could call me a Re-pro Technician, or, if you prefer, an RT.
CS- a little alarmed... You’re telling me you’ve actually killed…
CM—This is becoming tiresome.
CS- I’m just doing my job.
CM—Well, let’s hope you have a back-up plan.
CS- Okay, this interview is over.
CM—That’s about the smartest thing you’ve said since you walked in here.
CS- What future projects can we expect from the pen of Cora Miller?
CM—A continuation of my memoir; my next novel is titled True/False. In it, a loveless marriage drives Trudy Foster into the arms of hunky Cody Eastin, heir to the largest trucking company in the Midwest. Cody’s desire for Trudy quickly turns into obsession and Trudy tries to end the relationship without angering her lover. But Cody has more than just anger issues. He’s married too. When Cody’s wife is found strangled and her body discarded at the bottom of a ravine, Trudy suspects Cody may be the culprit. How can she break away from a killer without becoming his next victim? In the meantime, buy WINTER COLLECTION…or else.
Cora Miller is an RT and award-winning author who’s been featured in Booking Matters Magazine, The Cincinnati Enquirer and countless radio interviews. Winter Collection is her first collection of short stories and is available at www.starpublish.com , www.amazon.com, www.bn.com
